Posted byILOVEFOOD94on 11/4/2008

I Love the Kanpai of Tokyo. It is so good. Even though it is so expensive. Since tomorrow is my birthday i am going ther to eat! The food is excellent. But, the one thing i dont like is the fact that you have to sit with total strangers.

My worst japanese dinner exper...

My worst japanese dinner experience EVER! I ate at this restaurant in May 2008. My wife and I have eaten at several Japanese restaurants from the East to West coasts. This is by far the WORST we have visited. I have never written a review of a restaurant, but this was so bad I thought I should. Up from our home in the Atlanta area, we invited my elderly parents for their first experience at a Japanese restaurant, basing our choice of restaurant on the one review listed to date and the restaurant's own website. What a mistake! Entering the restaurant, my wife and I both wanted to leave due to the dirty appearance, but did not want to disappoint my parents. The hibachi was dirty with food from the previous group. The chef cleaned it somewhat before cooking, but the old food was still visible around the edges. When I asked for a sushi menu, the waiter looked at me like I had two heads. I finally got the sushi ordered and, for the most part, it was okay. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The soup tasted okay and I hoped my first impression of the restaurant was a mistake, but then came the salad. I overheard the woman next to me say, "Oh I just love this dressing", as the salads were distributed. I'm sorry, but the dressing had the flavor of what I think used vegetable oil would taste like. I couldn't get it out of my mouth fast enough. The chef either was VERY inexperienced or just not a good chef. My wife never received her steamed rice, after asking for it twice. We kept waiting for the soy sauce to be put on the table and when the waiter brought the check I asked him if the restaurant did not put it out on the table. He was American and I had to ask the question three times to get him to understand. He told me if I had asked the chef he would have given us some soy sauce. Doesn't most chinese and japanese restaurant offer soy sauce as they do salt and pepper? The chef could not get the orders correct as it was, I didn't want to confuse the chef more by asking for soy sauce. As if that was not bad enough, being my parents first experience with a japanese restaurant, we wanted the fire, the "egg roll", the onion volcano, etc. that japanese chefs normally do and was done at some of the other tables. Not only was I upset for my parents, but the children at the table also did not get the "show" that is part of the experience. I could go on and on, but I think I got my point across. I feel sorry for the Spartanburg residents that think this is how japanese dining should be. I do not and will not recommend this restaurant at all.

Now with Sushi!

Kanpai of Tokyo has been a local favorite for years. They've recently added sushi to the menu, and I must say it is some of the best in town. The wait staff is friendly and professional, be sure and have a Plum Punch or a few shots of sake for the total effect. They cook the food right in front of you, it's a great show for the whole family.
